Mascaras are an obsession of mine — they either make or break your look. You can wear them with a natural, no makeup look or topped with a bold lip, it just works!

I don’t really wear false lashes (read: falsies, for short), therefore I would favor applying a generous amount of mascara in the likes of a heavy-baby doll, goopy lashes. You know what that means? My mascaras usually run out pretty quick!

Therefore, I was on the hunt for a new mascara! I bought Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 Mascara in Black a few months ago, and decided to put the mascara to test. Consequently, I would also like to share with you my on-the-occasion mascara routine!

So read up ahead for my impressions, routine and review.

First Impression

The bristles of the mascara really got to me. I believe the bristles is plastic, but it feels natural and soft! I like how the color is striking purple – it helps me spotting for when the mascara is cluttered among my makeup collection.  Not to mention, the packaging – instant-worthy!

According to, the mascara’s ingredients include the following ingredients: Rice Bran Wax to help lengthen lashes, Carnauba Wax to ensure a smooth application, Pro Vitamin B to treat and thicken lashes, and Olive Esters to condition, treat, and protect lashes.

My Mascara Routine

Let explain on my lashes; they’re naturally long and I haven’t done anything to it – no serums, no extensions, nothing. Over the years, I noticed that they are very strong as well – from cheap mascaras back to my younger days up to heavy-duty mascaras I wear today. That being said, I apply 2-3 coats of different mascaras on my eyes at a time. The mascaras that I search for are usually for volume as I personally think the length is already enough. I’ve always think that they are long on its own and all I need is that extra oomph.

First and foremost, I curl my lashes. This is my first priority, even when I don’t feel like wearing mascara! This will make my peepers more open and bright. I curl my lashes as close to the roots of my lashes and pump it a few times – as well as further upwards.

Afterwards — with a magnified mirror in hand, I tilt my head back and start off by rolling the wand from the roots of my lashes. The technique that I do is that I don’t stroke it upwards – I zig-zagged my wand, motioning them outwards from the middle to the end corner of my eyes. As I want it wispy, full and separated – I put on three coats without waiting for it to dry each application.

I noticed on the third coat that it’s getting a little clumpy, but personally I don’t mind at all. If it’s a problem to you, you can just brush it off with an eyelash comb – a trick that Audrey Hepburn’s makeup artist would use. I also find the formula a bit drying – but overall, it’s a wonderful mascara. I use the same technique on my bottom lashes as well.

This has got to be the best mascara I have tried so far!

My choices of mascaras may come and go, but Camera, Lights, Lashes has captured my heart! Never have I experienced full, fluttery lashes all day long!

Here’s me after two coats!
