How to Make Your Own DIY Lipstick

Get Your Base Ingredients

Homemade Lipstick by Mum

If you are not a fan of coloured lipsticks but still want to create something that could moisturize your lips, you may try the basic natural lipstick. Regardless you are going for colourless or coloured lipsticks; you’ll need some base ingredients:

5ml of beeswax

5ml of shea butter/mango butter/almond butter/avocado butter

5ml of almond oil/extra virgin oil/jojoba oil

Once you have your base ingredients and decided that you want to add colours into your lipstick go ahead and pick out your preferred colours.

Choose Your Lipstick Colour

There are many ways to create colours using natural ingredients. For example:

  1. For Red, use beetroot powder or crushed beet chips. Alternatively, you can use 1 drop of natural red food colouring with no chemical additives.
  2. For Brown/Reddish-Brown, use cocoa powder, a tiny pinch or cinnamon or turmeric.

After choosing your colour, if you prefer matte texture, go ahead and add ¼ teaspoon of bentonite clay.

Now you have all the ingredients you need, let’s start making your own lipstick!

Instructions:

  1. Melt beeswax, shea butter/cocoa butter and oil of your choice in a glass jar without a lid in a pot of simmering water.
  2. Once melted, remove from heat. Add your chosen colours and/or essential oil if you want to have a scented lipstick.
  3. Once all ingredients are well mixed up but still remain liquid, use a dropper and pour the liquid into a lip chap/lipstick container. You can clean your old lipstick container and re-use them.
  4. Fill just below the top as it will expand slightly as it cools.
  5. Leave it cool for about 30 minutes. Store it in a cool place to prevent it from soften.

Using Your Eyeshadow

Yes, you can recycle your eyeshadow and make them into a DIY lipstick! Get your old eyeshadow that are either loose or in compacted powder form.

Instructions:

  1. Scoop the eyeshadow into a bowl and mash it up until it turns into a fine, lump-free powder.
  2. Place about 15ml of petroleum jelly in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 5ml of eyeshadow powder into the bowl.
  3. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat it until it melts and becomes runny.
  4. Stir the mixture to ensure the colours are distributed evenly throughout the jelly.
  5. Pour the mixture into an old lipstick container.
  6. Fill just below the top as it will expand slightly as it cools.
  7. Leave it cool for about 30 minutes. Store it in a cool place to prevent it from soften.

If you want to have shimmer in your DIY lipstick, add a little shimmering eyeshadow to the main colour you have chosen. For a more saturated colour, add more eyeshadow powder. On the other hand, add less powder for a tinted lipgloss look.

Recycle Your Old Lipsticks

  2. Put the bowl the microwave and heat it up for 5 seconds on high.
  3. When melted, mix them together to blend the colours.
  4. Continue to microwave in 5-second intervals until blended.
  5. Pour the mixture into an old lipstick container.
