Over the years, lipsticks application varies between the perfect MAC’s Ruby Woo and just wearing lip balm. The terminology varies from the simple (“nude”) to the vampiric (“just-bitten”) to the mysterious (“my lips, but better”), but it’s essentially the same thing: a natural, healthy, “done” lip. Still, does the term hold the same shade for everyone?
Searching for the perfect near-to-your-lip color is a bit difficult to generalize, hence I took the task of randomly inquiring unsuspecting targets (don’t ask me how, hehe) on how they achieve their ideal “my lips, but better” look.
Read on ahead for the surprising results.

“I’m in love with dark, vampy lips, but I couldn’t find the perfect shade for a long time. I went all over the place and finally I discovered Film Noir lipstick from MAC, which I’m wearing now. Sometimes I wear this color everyday. Call me crazy, but…why not?”
SHEEDA JAFRI, 25
“My lips are quite small and thin, so I line them with Laura Mercier’s Lip Pencil in Natural Lips, then I smudge it in. I love how the color compliments my skin color as well! As a result, my lips look really Angelina Jolie-ish.”
NUR SYAFIQAH, 25
“I had been looking for a brown nude lipstick—they either make my lips look too dark or too pale—and I recently found the Clinique Chubby Stick in Whole Lotta Honey. It’s really good. And so rich and thick, it’s amazing! I just love moisturizing lipsticks.”
ASMIDAR ALI, 24
“I have full, pigmented lips, hence lipsticks on me is quite strong. While preferring a minimal lip — I love a bold color, and for that I use MAC’s So Chaud. It’s the best—just a little life of color, but it’s also very natural. If I need it to stay longer, I’ll pat loose powder all over my lips, seriously – it works!”
AIN SAKINAH, 25
“On my cheeks and lips I wear a berry lipstick—Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural in N9 Copper Pink. It’s super nice because you can put on a tiny, tiny little bit. Since my lips are thin, this lipstick gives my lips some dimension. Not to mention, appropriate for everyday wear.”
NUR HADZLIN, 32
“I’m fair skinned, therefore the only color I think of that suits my skin would be within the pink range. I love all kinds of pink; fuschia, rosy, etc.. however my favorite shade of lipstick would always be mauve. Seems like I have been using this sadly discontinued (I think) Dior one for a while now, and I’m still in love with it to this very day!”
