Chanel N°5 L’Eau, the fifth interpretation of the iconic perfume.
Chanel’s legendary number that is synonymous with a scent; one that has bewitched men (winks) and enamored women through the decades.
I want to give women an artificial perfume … I don’t want any rose or lily of the valley — a perfume that is a composition. – Coco Chanel
One could say that the N°5 perfume and its many intriguing layers of scent is Coco immortalized in a bottle; each layer defining her will to always go against the norm. It is a perfume decomposed with the strength of a woman. 95 years later, Chanel is set to unveil its fifth interpretation of the venerable perfume — Chanel N°5 L’Eau. To truly understand a scent that has become a 20th-century icon, we are bringing you the details on this magnificent fragrance.
The Making of Chanel N°5 L’Eau
L’Eau stands out with its freshness, but at the same time, pays tribute to the original N°5, wherein aldehyde was cleverly fused with its signature May Rose, jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla. The May Rose and jasmine are hand-picked from the flower fields in Grasse where the roses have been reserved almost exclusive for Chanel N°5.

The most interesting fact is that, the roses are hand-picked in a swift movement of the wrist by only female flower pickers. “Female flower pickers!” The creation of the May Rose absolute begins with the picking of the flowers; the flowers are then transported within the grounds to the Sotraflor plant facility where the petals are transformed into concrete. it is from this concreted that the golden liquid known as absolute is extracted and used in the formulas to create the N°5.
The Scent of Chanel N°5 L’Eau
L’Eau, meaning water in French, is Olivier’s modern take on the iconic N°5. It is clear and vivacious. With fresh notes of lemon, orange and mandarin for that citrus hint, and sexy undertones of ylang, ylang. These notes are distilled in a uniquely new process for a greener scent. There would be no N°5 without aldehydes, but this time round, the aldehydes are laced around the blend to keep it luminous, unlike the original’s heavy dose that gave it its iconic everyday powdery scent.

As you dive deeper into the perfume, “May Rose and jasmine envelop and take you back to the flower fields”. While hints of cedar and vetiver tie it all in as the most natural version of Chanel N°5. And how should one wear the N°5 L’Eau?
““Wear it where you want to be kissed,” a Madame Coco once said.
Chanel N°5 L’Eau retails RM 390 (50 ml) & RM 573 (100 ml) in all Chanel department stores nationwide.
